Jipijapa Station serves the Jipijapa district, a quiet residential area of northern Quito just beyond Iñaquito. It is a comfortable middle-class neighbourhood with offices, schools and plenty of local shops.

Getting there: on foot from the Jipijapa and El Batán neighbourhoods, or by bus along Avenidas América and 6 de Diciembre and the northern corridor routes.

Why is the station called Jipijapa?
It takes its name from the Jipijapa district, which in turn recalls the coastal town of Jipijapa in Manabí province — one of the historic centres for weaving Ecuador's toquilla straw hats, known worldwide as Panama hats. The palm used to make them, Carludovica palmata, is itself known as the jipijapa palm. UNESCO added the weaving tradition to its intangible heritage list in 2012.
Can I buy a Panama hat near the station?
The district is named after the hat's home town, but it is residential and not a crafts market. For genuine toquilla straw hats, look in the Historic Centre or La Mariscal, both reachable by metro.
